There are no Čuvačs available for re-homing or rescue at this time
The good news is that Slovenský Čuvač dogs rarely show up in rescue or in need of re-homing. At this time we are not aware of any Čuvačs that need a new home.
Responsible Čuvač breeders screen their buyers to be sure there are no "red flags" that might put their puppies at risk in the future. Responsible buyers think about all the pros and cons before they buy and after investing their time, money, energy and love in their dogs, they tend to keep them.
Responsible breeders also include a clause in their puppy buying contracts that states that they, as the breeder, do not want to see their pups abandoned and have the "first right of refusal." This means that the dog will not be transferred to another person without informing the breeder, who should offer to take back their puppy/dog and not let it be abandoned to a shelter. Even if the owner wishes to transfer ownership to another person, you must have the breeder's approval of the transfer in writing.
But we know that things happen. Dogs run away, get lost and show up in a shelter where they are mistaken for a different breed. This is why your dog should be microchipped and you should not rely on tags and collars that can fall off. Owners become ill, incapacitated and sometimes die. Divorce can cause issues with who gets the dog or nobody wants the dog. There can be changes in financial situations. People move and find landlords, homeowners associations or neighbors who complain about the dog's size or barking and they are forced to get rid of the dog.
If an owner finds themselves in any of these situations and they feel they need to give their Čuvač away, they should always contact the breeder first. If the breeder is a responsible one, they should help. But if they refuse, contact Cuvac USA and we will see if anyone is looking for a Čuvač before an owner surrenders their dog to a shelter.
Also, if you own a Čuvač, put its puppy contract, papers and breeder's information in a safe place. Make provisions for your dog should you become incapacitated or die.
